EZEKIEL
Takeoff
The book of Ezekiel was written by an exiled Jewish priest of the same name in the sixth century BC. Though captivity in Babylon denied Ezekiel the chance to practice his vocation, God gave him the crucial ministry of prophesying to other Jewish exiles, often in bizarre and unique ways. His ministry was first and foremost one of warning: he pronounced the coming judgment of God on Judah, Jerusalem, and her enemies. But he also proclaimed Godâs promise that in due time He would restore His people to their land. Ezekiel also had a vision of the end times and the fate of Israel, among other spectacular visions. His contemporaries included the prophets Daniel, Jeremiah, Habakkuk, and Obadiah.
In Flight
Commission of the Prophet (Ezekiel 1â3)
How was Ezekiel able to do the unusual things he did (see Ezekiel 2:2; 3:24)?
Ezekiel 3:1-3 shows the importance of internalizing Godâs Word. Do you let pastors hand-feed you the Bible, or do you feast on it on your own? Describe your daily biblical feast.
Correction of the Problem (Ezekiel 4â24)
Name one thing the Lord instructed Ezekiel to do in chapter 4. Why did God ask Ezekiel to do this?
Because Israel is at the geographic center of Godâs plan for the world (see Ezekiel 5:5), itâs a hotbed of conflict. Read Psalm 122, then jot down a prayer for Israel.
In Ezekiel 16, the Lord painted a vivid picture of Jerusalem as a harlot. How was Jerusalem unfaithful to the Lord? What does the end of Ezekiel 16 tell you about Godâs character? (See also Ezekiel 33:11.)
Castigation of the People (Ezekiel 25â32)
In Ezekiel 28, how did God describe Satan before his fall (see vv. 12-15)? What was the cause of Satanâs fall (see vv. 15-19)?
Conciliation of Godâs Purpose (Ezekiel 33â48)
In Ezekiel 34, the Lord described Himself as a shepherd. Where else in the Bible is He referred to as a shepherd? What does this tell you about Him?
What do the dry bones of Ezekiel 37 represent (see v. 11)?
The book of Ezekiel ends on a positive note: âThe name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THEREâ (Ezekiel 48:35). Do you have such a vision for where you live? How can you realize that vision?
Landing
God made Ezekiel a spiritual watchman for the Jews (see Ezekiel 3:17). This meant Ezekiel was to be constantly on the watch for what God was doing and saying through world events happening around him so he could proclaim this information to the people. Under the new covenant, the Lord desires to bring all people into a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. Will you share this truth with others, choosing to be a watchman for your culture like Ezekiel was for his?
Memento
âI will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.â
